It had been just over a year since our last visit to Clifden, Connemara in the western-most reaches of County Galway. My husband and mother were with us this trip, which gave us an incentive to return to the area, though one never really needs a reason to return to the beauty that is Connemara.
While we love Irish bed and breakfasts, we opted for a Connemara self catering cottage for our (too brief) stay.
Stay at a Connemara Self Catering Cottage
Our 3 bedroom/ 2 bath cottage was located at the edge of Clifden on N59. Situated in the Clifden Glen development of holiday homes, the house allowed us all a bit of privacy and space.
As our visit took place in early October, only a few cottages around us were inhabited and the on-site pub was closed. But none of that mattered as we were busy exploring the wild beauty of the region and nearby Clifden had everything we would need.
The three bedrooms in our cottage were perfect for our family. The master bedroom, on the main level, had a double bed and en-suite bath. My girls shared an upstairs bedroom with twin beds, their “very own nightstands with lights”, and a door directly into the bath. My mother had a chance away from all of us with a room down the hall.
The cozy living room was a lovely place to relax in the evenings, especially when we lit the fire. And the kitchen had everything we needed to put together meals from our grocery shopping expeditions.
Around the cottage we found quite a bit to do outdoors. A large playground was just down the hill, while a walk into the hills the rise behind the cottages led to salmon pools and ruins of a famine village.
