Uniquely Irish Gifts : Belleek Pottery

Known the world over, Belleek Pottery is a favorite souvenir of Ireland. The Belleek Classic pieces, hand painted with delicate shamrocks, are especially popular as gifts due to both their Irishness and affordability.

Lough Erne basket at BelleekEach piece of Belleek is created by hand following the 16 steps and any piece that is not approved as, to quote Mary Poppins, “Practically perfect in every way,” is destroyed. There are no ‘seconds’ at Belleek, which means that if you own a piece of Belleek Pottery, you own the very best.

During our trip to Fermanagh this past summer, I spent my allotted souvenir money on a Lough Erne basket. Stunning in its delicacy and light as a feather, this tiny basket can take an experienced craftsman a week to create.

We also purchased a Christmas ornament to add to our collection. The St. Kieran’s Celtic Cross is a uniquely Irish gift. It can be hung on a Christmas tree or, if you want to see it year round, hang it on the wall.

Belleek is a beautiful symbol of Ireland.  Maybe next trip to Ireland we will have a chance to tour the factory.  I will have to check out Irishshop.com for some Christmas gifts.  Ideally, I like to find Christmas gifts for people while we are actually on vacation but while we did bring some things home with us, this vacation was more about experiences over souvenirs.  Nice to know I can get the souvenirs I didn’t bring back in my suitcase!
