I can't emphasize it enough – the best Ireland vacations are the ones where you stay in fewer locations and really explore the surrounding area. To well explore the south-eastern section of Ireland you can't do better than a self catering cottage in Cahir, County Tipperary.
Often called the ‘Crossroads of the South', Cahir is wonderfully located in the southern part of Tipperary, offering easy day trips will take you inland or to the edges of Ireland.

Just outside the village of Cahir at the edge of the Knockmealdown Mountains sits a lovely cottage that is perfect for families!
Tir na nÓg cottage sleeps 6 comfortably, has a lovely open kitchen/ living room, two ensuite bathrooms, and an outdoor courtyard with a perfect view to watch the sun set.
Making a lovely spot even lovelier is your hostess Peggy. From the moment we arrived until our departure we felt like long-lost relation!
Peggy greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home as she led us through the cottage. Asking about our plans during our stay she made wonderful recommendations and provided so much local information which really enhanced our time in Cahir. During our stay she would surprise the girls with fabulous home made desserts, and even invited them back to pick plums with her. I can honestly say we were sad to move on from Peggy and her wonderful, homey cottage.

Explore the South East! Day Trips from Cahir
Besides visiting the fabulous Cahir Castle – one of our personal favorites in Ireland – and the lovely Coronation Walk to the Swiss Cottage, you'll find plenty of places that are easy day trips from the ‘Crossroads of the South'.
Rock of Cashel – 30 minutesÂ
Truly one of the most magnificent sites in all of Ireland. Be sure to watch the audio visual before you self-guide through the site.
The Vee Pass – 20 minutesÂ
Rise 2000 feet above sea level over Bay Lough for some of the most panoramic views in Ireland. Bring your walking shoes and take a short hike.
Ardmore – 90 minutes
You'll pass through the Vee on your way. If you're a fan of Nora Roberts the village of Ardmore may already be on your radar. If not, this pretty fishing village has a gorgeous beach and wonderful cliff walk from St. Brendan's Church to the Round Tower that rises above the town.
Kilkenny – 75 minutes
Kilkenny Castle, Medieval Mile, food & craft trails plus all the historical sites outside the city! Explore County Kilkenny
Waterford – 75 minutes
Ireland's oldest city is filled with history. And, of course, Waterford Crystal.
Cork City – 60 minutesÂ
Enjoy the history of Cork city (and the fab English Market). Nearby and not to miss: Blarney Castle, the Jameson Experience in Midleton (30 minutes), the fishing village/ foodie destination of Kinsale (25 minutes). You could explore Mitchelstown Cave or the Donkey Sanctuary on your way to and from Cork!
