Great Blasket viewed from Dunquin
Great Blasket Island doesn't look like it is so very far from Dunquin, on County Kerry's Dingle Peninsula, but the sea is treacherous through this straight. Winds and rocks can make the passage dangerous. The island was inhabited until 1953 after which the islanders were relocated as the Irish government could not guarantee their health or safety. Eco tours to the island run in the summer months.
