Ireland is filled with fascinating castles, megalithic tombs and medieval forts.  On our first trip as a family we visited Cahir Castle in Tipperary.  Often overlooked as it is a mere 30 minutes from the wondrous Rock of Cashel, my family spent an amazing afternoon wandering through the castle, climbing the battlements and exploring the dungeon.

The attached article from the Irish Times lists other fabulous, and often overlooked sites around Ireland.

travel on a few kilometres through the rolling Tipperary countryside to lovingly restored Cahir Castle. Here you can access virtually all areas of this huge Butler stronghold, especially the walls and towers that were part of its great defences.

Take the guided tour and the history really comes to life with children especially loving the dungeon, the cannon balls still impaling the outer walls and stories of a boiled oil welcome for impertinent attackers.

After exploring the castle be sure to wander through town, it is filled with antique shops which hold their own fascinating histories.
