Behind the Scenes at Knappogue Castle

Knappogue Castle, owned and managed by Shannon Heritage, was once open for public tours. Though the walled garden is still available to visitors, there are only two ways into the castle: the nightly Medieval Banquet from April – October or via castle rental, for an event or lodging.

During our 3 night stay at Knappogue I had the honor of chatting with two of the ‘Ladies of Knappogue' – Lady Alison and Lady Caroline – as well as popping into the nightly medieval banquet for a bit of craic to end the evening. Enjoy the video below for a ‘behind the scenes' look at the Medieval Banquet at Knappogue Castle.

And speaking of behind the scenes….

Let me take you into the Knappogue Castle most visitors don't see! Beyond the banqueting hall and up the towers stairs!

History of the Castle

The medieval tower house, constructed in 1647 by Sean MacNamara, underwent a tumultuous history over the following three centuries. It was seized by Cromwell, returned to the MacNamara clan, sold to the Scotts, and then acquired by Lord Dunboyne, who undertook significant restorations. In the early 1900s, it served as the headquarters for General Michael Brennan and the Irish Free State Army.

The castle fell into disrepair during the 1920s, but in 1966, it was purchased by the Hon. Mark Edwin Andrews from Houston, Texas. Together with his wife, a renowned architect, and in partnership with Shannon Heritage , they restored the castle to its 15th-century grandeur. The Andrews transformed the tower into grand state rooms, which are now used to welcome guests through a private entrance.

Knappogue Castle is one of the few private castles in Ireland that offers accommodation, making it an ideal choice for family getaways and multi-generational vacations! With spacious rooms for all, a delicious Irish breakfast served daily, and a prime location in the heart of the West of Ireland, there's no shortage of activities to keep you entertained.

Have you visited Knappogue Castle? Did you explore the grounds or enjoy the Medieval Banquet?

  1. I’ve never been inside the castle but I absolutely love the grounds of this castle especially the ‘secret’ garden around back of it. It’s stunning and I love to see all your posts and videos on Ireland:-) I love Ireland, even in the rain!

    1. Sometimes I think Ireland is best in the rain. Well, not a lashing rain, but a lovely, soft, sparkling rain. 🙂 The walled garden behind the castle is a great surprise- such a quiet place.
