Faclonry in Ireland with Willie Forde from Adare Country Pursuits

This article is based on a podcast episode featuring Willie Forde, the founder Adare Country Pursuits in County Limerick. If you prefer to listen to the podcast, you can find the player at the bottom of the page.

Discovering A Unique Irish Experience

Willie Ford is the owner of Adare Country Pursuits at Adare Manor in Adare, County Limerick. After spending many years as a professional animal trainer, Willie was asked to create a Falconry Center in Adare. What makes Adare County Pursuits different than other centers for falconry in Ireland is that you can choose the birds you want to learn about and work with. All falconry sessions are private; your family or group will not be mixed with other people in a large group. Each session will give you information about the birds, allow you to handle the birds (with supervision), and go on Hawk Walks.

Falconry: A Rare and Regulated Pursuit

Falconry, the ancient art of hunting with trained birds of prey, is a rare and highly specialized activity in Ireland. It requires a deep commitment, with daily care and attention to the birds. The process of getting involved is far from simple—individuals must go through extensive training, mentorship, and must be approved by National Parks and Wildlife, the governing body that controls all licenses for the practice. Adare County Pursuits is a licensed zoo. The care of the birds is paramount. They have a minimum of two vet visits annually to check up on the birds in addition to daily (even Christmas Day) physical inspections of all the birds.

Falconers must track the history and origins of their birds, ensuring that each one is registered and wears a proper identification ring. The commitment doesn't end with the birds themselves: falconers must be prepared for constant upkeep, handling, and monitoring of their charges, making this an activity that requires expertise and dedication. Despite its challenges, those who do pursue falconry find it an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a unique way to engage with nature and history, and for those who are interested in getting involved, it’s crucial to seek out proper training and guidance before attempting to practice this ancient skill.

Other Activities Available

In addition to falconry, archery is also available. This is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, from beginners to more experienced enthusiasts. Visitors to the facility are introduced to a simple and effective method of archery, which helps even first-timers land their arrows on the target. The targets are large, and the training system is designed to make it easier for anyone to aim and hit the mark, even those who have no prior experience.

Archery provides a thrilling challenge, with guests enjoying the satisfaction of progressing from basic shots to hitting the center of the target. With archery growing in popularity, the team behind the activities is also expanding offerings to include clay pigeon shooting in the near future. Whether it’s archery or falconry, these activities allow guests to experience something truly unique, immersing them in Ireland’s traditions of skill and outdoor pursuits.

About Adare Manor

While the activities at Adare Manor are exciting in their own right, the resort itself is undergoing a stunning transformation that will further elevate the experience for guests. Originally built as a manor house, Adare Manor has long been a prestigious location for luxury stays. The estate features a significantly expanded hotel with over 100 rooms, offering luxurious accommodations, new conference and banqueting facilities for up to 400 guests, and a revamped golf course.

Must-See Destinations in Ireland

Aside from the activities at Adare Manor, Ireland offers plenty of beautiful locations for those looking to explore the countryside. Cliffs of Moher in County Clare is a popular must-see for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. For a more intimate taste of Ireland’s culture, the charming Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry provides a picturesque coastal drive and some of the best local food, including fresh seafood.

However, for many, the ultimate Irish getaway can be found in West Cork. Known for its coastline, tranquil towns like Ross Carbery and Skibbereen offer a serene escape, complete with charming accommodations and restaurants. This area is renowned for its seafood, with numerous eateries serving the freshest catches from the surrounding waters. It’s the perfect place for those who wish to experience more of rural Ireland.
