Staying at the Pod Páirc
Top of the Rock, a former family farm, offers unique accommodations in pod-style units. It is not a hostel, but it does have several hostel-type qualities. A unique form of glamping, options include standard pods for couples or small groups, family pods for up to five people, and luxury pods with a kitchenette, double bed, pullout sofa, and en-suite toilet. Each pod has a porch and picnic area, ideal for outdoor meals. Uniquely Irish, pods are based off of the Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula.
Families can enjoy the play area and a small animal pen featuring donkeys, goats, sheep, and ducks. In the evenings, guests gather around the communal firepit for stories and chats, creating a sense of community.
Walking Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Walking Centre provides access to nearby trails that suit both casual walkers and experienced hikers. Popular routes include the Sheep’s Head Way, known for its peaceful paths, and the Poets, Pilgrims, and Places guided walk. Led by local guide Richard White, this tour combines local history with scenic views.
St. Finbarr Walks are an activity unique to the area. St. Finbarr arrived at the Top of the Rock and admonished the people to return to Christ, after which he made his way to Gougane Barra. Now, people come to walking this ancient route he took. There are 3 walks per year. Official walks take place over Easter, and during the months of August and September, you can typically expect around 40-60 people to attend. The full walk is 37 kilometers, but there are shorter walks available. These walks take about 45 minutes to complete. They take you along the river and through other farms. There are also Alpaca walks where you can arrange to walk the alpacas.
Walking in Ireland often involves private farmland. Top of the Rock is part of the Walk Scheme, which ensures paths are maintained while respecting the landowners. Visitors are reminded to follow signs, close gates, and respect farm animals. You can also purchase handmade walking sticks. These walking sticks are cut in the local woods and are handcrafted with leather details and finished with the St. Finbarr's logo.
