Bitesize History of St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints**, has been celebrated with a feast day on March 17 since 1631.

This date wasn't chosen at random. Though St. Patrick is said to have died on March 17, 461 CE (though there is also argument for 493CE) this date is also quite close to the spring equinox, an event celebrated by the ancient Celts as a ‘time of perfect balance', when day and night are of equal length.

As a Catholic holiday, St. Patrick's Day was celebrated with religious observances including mass and pilgrimages to sites associated with the saint.

It's said that the first St. Patrick's Day parade was held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601. The first parade in Ireland didn't occur until 1903 in County Waterford.
