Things to do in Kinsale, Ireland
I received a terrific question from Jami Casey. This is actually similar to questions I receive often about how to split a group. So I will answer Jami's specific question, then offer a few general tips.
My family of 4 is traveling to Ireland in May of 2024, and I am wondering what you might suggest for my 21 year old daughter and I to do while my husband and son spend a day golfing at Old Head. We will be staying in Kinsale for two nights, the evening before the tee time and the evening they finish up their round of golf.
Things to do in Kinsale, Ireland in a Day
Kinsale is a charming harbour town that is the beginning or the end of the Wild Atlantic Way (depending on which way you are driving).
The town became known as the ‘gourmet capital of Ireland' and many visitors consider it a ‘must' on their itinerary.
If you are in Kinsale without a car I recommend joining a walking tour in the morning and fitting in a harbour cruise, as well. Take a walk out to Charles Fort for a bit of exploration, then return to town to wander the cute shops. Don't forget to stop for an afternoon sweet in one of the cafes.
If you have a car – or would consider hiring a driver for a day (contact About Ireland Taxi Tours) – Kinsale is a terrific place to tour from.
You could visit the English Market and the Gaol in Cork city and explore Cobh, last port of call for the Titanic and home to Spike Island, ‘Ireland's Alcatraz.'
Blarney Castle and Gardens can take 2-4 hours, depending on how much of the extensive grounds you want to see.
Or follow the Wild Atlantic Way to the west. Small fishing villages, Mizen Head, and Bantry are a few places you'll encounter.

Tips to Split Your Travel Group
When splitting your group for activities or touring you want to check 2 things.
- Is there enough to do in walking distance if half the group has no car?
- If half the group has transportation be sure they aren't doing something the other half of the group also wants to do.
Beyond this you just want to be aware of any time limits, especially if people need to be dropped off or picked up somewhere.
And be sure to have a way to keep in touch with each other. Podcase episode 138 has tips for using your mobile phone in Ireland.
Ireland Update
Since I checked in last from Dublin I've been on a whirlwind trip along the Wild Atlantic Way – from Clifden to Doolin, and now in Killarney.
Highlights so far include Kylemore Abbey, the Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and live music in every town.
