Which City Gaol Should I Visit in Ireland? | Traveling in Ireland Podcast Episode 165

Hello from the luxurious Castlemartyr Resort in County Cork!

This is my first time visiting the property and to say I am impressed is an understatement!

I'll tell you more about it, but first I have a terrific question from Anthony B.

Visiting Irish Gaols

I am an Australian, visiting Ireland for the first time in a few weeks. Travelling with my partner, and 12 year old son.

Out of Dublin, Cork, or Belfast, I wanted to ask which of the 3 gaols should I be prioritising? We are visiting all 3 cities, but I feel we probably don't need to do all 3 gaols?

Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin – notable for 1916 Rising inmates and executions. Guided tours only. OPW site.
Cork City Gaol – 19th century prison. Self guided & guided tours.
Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast – notable for The Troubles. Self guided & guided tours

How to get the epic photo of St. Coleman's Cathedral in Cobh

Deck of Cards - Cobh

Want to get the shot of the colorful descending townhouses (aka the Deck of Cards) in Cobh with St. Coleman's Cathedral in the background?

You just need to climb Spy Hill. Yep, that's really what it's called. 🙂

From the Cobh Museum just start walking uphill on Joseph Mary Plunkett Way. Keep left at the fork and keep climbing.

When the road finally becomes flat you'll need to hold your camera (or phone) up and find your shot. Despite what you've read there is no need to climb on top of the wall.
