Can You Rent a Car Over the Age of 75 in Ireland?

I receive a lot of questions about renting a car in Ireland when you're over 70. While there may be additional requirement for those 75+ let me be very clear: you can rent a car in Ireland if you are over 75.

This complete guide covers Ireland's car rental age restrictions, additional documentation you may need, insurance requirements, and the senior driver policies for the major car rental companies in Ireland, using information provided directly by the rental agencies.

If you're comparing companies, keep reading to see how their policies differ.

Everything You Need to Know About Renting a Car in Ireland if You are 75 or Older

Can You Rent a Car in Ireland if You Are Over 75?

Yes, you can rent a car in Ireland if you are over 75.

It is not illegal, and there is no national law that prevents older travelers from renting a vehicle. What you do need to watch for are the policies set by each rental company.

Many car rental companies in Ireland rent to drivers up to age 75 without additional requirements. Some will rent to drivers over 75 with extra documentation, and a few have no upper age limit at all.

That’s why it’s important to compare policies before you book, especially if you are 75 or older.

What is the maximum age to rent a car in Ireland?

Unlike many countries, Ireland does not have a legal maximum age for renting a car. Instead, each rental company sets its own upper age limit and any additional requirements for older drivers.

Most rental companies allow drivers to rent without additional requirements until age 75. After that, you may be asked to provide extra documentation, such as a letter from your physician stating you are fit to drive or a letter from your insurance company confirming you have not had an at-fault accident in recent years. The exact requirements vary by company, which is why I've included a comparison later in this guide.

It's also worth noting that Ireland has minimum age and driving experience requirements.

Most rental companies require drivers to have been eligible to hold a driving license for at least 8 years, though drivers with licenses issued in the United States and Canada typically need 9 years of eligibility. (You do not need to have held the license continuously, only have been eligible to hold it.)

Larger vehicles, including vans and people carriers, generally require an additional three years of licence eligibility.

Currently, Sixt and Irish Car Rentals are the only rental company I've found that rents to drivers between the ages of 21 and 24, though a young driver surcharge applies. (€38 with Sixt and €30 with Irish Car Rentals, per day.)

  1. Many companies require a letter from an insurance company of no accidents in last 5 years. Can this be an electronic letter or must it be on paper?

    1. The answer is – it depends. Each rental company will have their own requirements. Some may require the documents be sent prior to rental, in which case a digital/ email will be required. But if they want the information when you pick up the car, I would have a printed copy available.

  2. Hi, trying to plan a trip to Ireland for my husband and myself, both of us are over 75. Are there any additional insurance costs we should be prepared for when renting a car? I want to take your advice and go with Irish car rentals since they have no age restrictions.
Thanking you in advance for whatever help you can provide us.

    1. The Excess coverage should be all you need with Irish Car Rentals. Theft protection is included, as are tires, windshield, and roadside assistance.
If you add a second driver there is a fee for that (can be done online), as well as a cross border fee if you visit Northern Ireland (paid on pick up)
I hope that answers your question.
      Safe travels!

    2. Thank you Jody Halstead. You have given me such great relief wth this information. I am very accustomed to driving, year round. I live in Canada, and currently drive a 2021 Toyota Rav 4. I drove in 2013 when we were in Ireland. ☺️

  3. Greetings Jody, from Galway, I arrived last week from South Africa,, for a family wedding, i picked
up hire car from Budget, at Dublin Airport, I booked online through Carflexi, who took what thought was a deposit? Budget said they are just agents?
Question, Do you know of Carfexi as i am in Scotland, soon and i have booked a car through
them, from Glasgow/London and they have also had, what i thought was a deposit?
Thankyou, and enjoy the rest of your day.

    1. Carfexi is a 3rd party booking agent, not a car rental company. Unfortunately I don’t know how they do business. But this is why I don’t recommend using a 3rd party to book your vehicle. Effectively this 3rd party consolidator is your travel agent and you would need to contact them with questions.Sorry I can’t help further.

  4. I am looking for the following:
..Insurance information and suggestions for when renting cars
.. are there companies that allow both spouses to drive rental without additional cost: or best company as far as cost for spouse
..traveling with another couple: companies that are good about allowing a person to also drive and usual cost
.. good cars in Ireland for four adults and their luggage

    1. Hello Pat, and thank you for your questions.

I am looking for the following:
..Insurance information and suggestions for when renting cars
      > I fully cover insurance information right here. You might also find this article that covers every aspect of car rental helpful.
.. are there companies that allow both spouses to drive rental without additional cost: or best company as far as cost for spouse
      > My Irish Cousin offers this. NewWay might. Each car rental company is different regarding this option.
..traveling with another couple: companies that are good about allowing a person to also drive and usual cost
      > Pricing varies by car rental company and fees change annually.
.. good cars in Ireland for four adults and their luggage
I like the Hyundai Tucson. This article talks about how to choose your car.

The car rental company I use most often is Irish Car Rentals. Be sure to use this link to save 10% when you compare prices.

I hope that helps answer your questions.

  5. My husband(age77) and I(age70) are planning a trip to Ireland. Can I rent a car from Hertz, adding my husband as a driver, without him having to provide an insurance letter and drivers and doctor note?
Also, we thought we might rent a car directly through a car dealership, making it not mandatory for those over 75 documents.
I am not sure I can get excess insurance for the rental, though, if going through the Toyota dealership rental.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

    1. Even if your husband is only an additional driver he would have to provide all the relevant paperwork.
Unfortunately I can’t advise on rentals from the Toyota dealerships in Ireland. It’s not something I have experience with.  Your best option is to email dealerrental@toyota.ie to make inquiries. It is likely, however, that their rentals will have the same limits as all other rental car agencies as many of these limits are in place under national safety laws.
Another option you might consider is GoCar.ie.
      Safe travels.

  6. Hi, we have frequently booked a car rental for a week or 10 days, in advance of our arrival in Ireland, but have never rented for a half day, or day, like Zip Cars here in the States. We want to pick a friend up at the airport when they arrive but don’t need a car for more than maybe 24 hours. Is there something like Zip cars in Ireland, Dublin area specifically, where a U.S. citizen can rent a car reasonably priced, for a day or half a day?
    Thanks!

    1. If you wish to rent a car for a full day be sure to check IrishCarRentals.com and use code IFV to save 10%.

If you are looking for a shorter term rental check out GoCar.ie .

  7. Thank you for this, my husband forgot his licence and my father is 75. We thought we couldn’t rent a car but on finding this article I contacted Enterprise and they confirmed there were no additional requirements 🙂

    1. My husband is 78 years wants to rent a car at Dublin airport .what car rental company would you suggest ?We are from Ireland but the age for rental is a little confusing.

      1. Hi Noreen. IrishCarRentals.com is very straightforward and easy to work with. Don’t forget to use code IFV for your savings!

        1. Hello
Watched a discussion on loose women today about hiring a car in Ireland / Janet Street Porter flew into Knock airport to visit a friend and was told at the car hire desk that she needed doctors fitness cert and letter from her insurance company etc , so then they read out that if you are over 80yrs old you can not hire a car in Ireland and they not happy about it and I’m thinking that this sort of publicity is not good for uk tourism to Ireland because Janet said she can go anywhere else in Europe and hire a car no problem and she was correct in saying that statistics show that most road collisions are caused by a younger age group and not the over 70s
          Best Regards
          Ray Donegal

          1. Hi Ray.
I would venture to say that Janet didn’t do her research before arriving at the airport. Had she read my article (which you have commented on) she would have had all the information she needed before renting a car.
In this article I outline senior rental policies for most of the car rental companies operating in Ireland – including 3 that require no additional paperwork, doctors’ notes, etc.
While I understand that it is frustrating, each car rental company makes their own rules. And, unfortunately, I don’t own any of them.
