About Shannon Heritage

Marie Brennan from Shannon Heritage, a passionate advocate of the region, recently shared some of her favorite aspects of Shannon.

Shannon Heritage manages tourism and events at Bunratty Castle, King's John Castle, Knappogue Castle, Craggaunowen, and Dunguaire Castle in the west of Ireland as well as the GPO Visitor's Centre and Malahide Castle and Gardens in Dublin.

The mission of Shannon Heritage includes protecting and preserving historic places, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy through tourism.The preservation of Shannon Heritage sites relies on the support of local landowners, who help maintain access to the sites while balancing farming needs. Their cooperation ensures that visitors can safely explore these historical areas, highlighting the importance of community involvement in protecting Ireland’s heritage.

Folk Park at Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle, built in the 15th century, is one of Ireland’s most well-known heritage sites. The castle’s interior has been restored with period furniture and artifacts, providing insight into medieval life in Ireland. Visitors can explore the castle's fascinating history and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside.

This Year's Changes at Bunratty

King John's Castle

King John's Castle, located in the heart of Limerick, is another significant historical site in the Shannon region. King John was the brother of Richard the Lionheart. Built in the 13th century, during the time period of the mythical Robin Hood and the Knights of the Round Table, the castle offers a glimpse into medieval life through its impressive structure and interactive exhibits. Visitors can explore the castle’s towers, walk along the defensive walls, and enjoy panoramic views of the River Shannon. The castle also hosts events and educational programs, making it an engaging destination for families and history enthusiasts.

Events

Bunratty Castle medieval banquet runs nightly year-round. Irish Night in the Corn Barn runs less frequently. Knappogue Castle Medieval Banquet runs from April-October, as does Dunguaire Castle. All events at the castles can be booked online at Shannon Heritage.

The Castle also hosts seasonal events including a Halloween celebration. Whether you’re exploring the haunted castle or taking part in themed activities, these events are a great way to experience the magic of Ireland’s heritage sites in a new light.

Not to Miss Shannon Area Attractions

After visiting Shannon Heritage Events, Marie also suggests you visit:

  1. Lough Gur– located in Limerick, Lough Gur is known for it's prehistoric monuments as well as a picturesque lake.
  2. The Burren– a unique landscape with walking trails, monuments, and caves.
  3. Hunt Museum– housed in an 18th-century building, features a diverse collection of over 2,000 artifacts, including works by Picasso and Yeats, along with items from ancient civilizations.
  4. Walk to the Cliffs of Moher– the Shannon region offers scenic walking trails along the Atlantic coastline. The path, which runs close to the shore, offers views of the ocean and nearby cliffs.
